The Mushroom Researchers and Growers Society of
Thailand
“We were originated from building confidence in safe mushroom
production”. This was the beginning of the group and the
establishment of The MushroomResearchers and Growers Society of
Thailand in 1978, whichmembers of the society came together to build
relationship and to exchange experiences between members and
those who are interested in mushrooms, as well as reviving technical
aspect and providing find for research and development of mushroom
cultivation for members. In addition, the society also promotes
members and those who are interested in cultivating mushroom as
their main occupation to increase mushroom consumption demand.
Currently, the society has established mushroom farm groups in all
regions in Thailand to provide members with access to mushroom
production information, which the society will supervise marketing of
both domestic and international markets, as well as providing center
for producers and consumers to ensure fair trade.
Mushroom Market and Role of the Society
Currently, the society has more roles in promoting mushroom
farmers in various areas by cooperating with community enterprise
to organize promotion for quality mushroom production, adding value
to fresh mushroom, and expanding market to nearby communities.
Current mushroom production is approximately 120,000 tons, worth
more than THB 7 billion. This quantity will generate business cycle,
i.e. mushroom and equipment distribution, service business value
creation, processing business, which the total value worth at least
THB 12 billion. For mushroom export, in 2009, the export value
was as high as THB 290.1 million. However, the export value is still
considered to be very low, especially when comparing with mushroom
import of our neighboring countries such as China, which the import
value is as much as THB 987.1 million, excluding the value of hand-
carried mushrooms as gifts. This reflects a much clearer standpoint
of the market. In this regard, the society and community enterprises,
which, currently, there are more than 1,700 enterprises all over

In this issue of Food Focus Thailand Magazine, we are
honored to interview Khunying Prapaisri Pitakpaivan,
President of The Mushroom Researchers and Growers
Society of Thailand through Mr. Charnyut Parnutat,
Director-Secretariat Office of Community Enterprise
Promotion Board and Vice President of The Mushroom
Researchers and Growers Society of Thailand,
regarding the guideline for promoting mushroom
cultivation and the preparedness of Thai mushroom
growers towards ASEAN Economic Community, which
the concept of the president contributes to the
promotion of community enterprise and mushroom
growers‘ development in various places of the country.
