Upcycling Marine Ingredients: Better Lives for Pets

The growing trend of Pet Humanization is reshaping expectations for pet nutrition. Beyond basic nutrition, pet owners are increasingly seeking products that address specific health needs while placing greater emphasis on ingredient quality, sourcing, sustainability, and scientific evidence. Nutritional needs also vary across life stages, from supporting brain and vision development in puppies and kittens to maintaining skin, coat, bone, joint, and overall health in senior pets.

Marine ingredients offer opportunities to extend knowledge from Human Nutrition into Pet Nutrition, particularly through the upcycling of tuna co-products such as heads, skin, and bones. These materials can be transformed into high-value functional ingredients, including tuna omega-3 oil, tuna collagen peptides, and tuna bone calcium.

DHA-rich tuna oil can be incorporated into formulations targeting cognitive and eye health, particularly for puppies, kittens, and senior pets. Tuna collagen peptides offer potential for skin and coat as well as joint and mobility applications, while tuna bone calcium, naturally present as hydroxyapatite and accompanied by phosphorus, collagen, and trace minerals, can support formulations targeting bone, dental, and mobility health.

However, nutritional functionality alone is not enough. Palatability plays an important role in ensuring that pets accept and consistently consume a product. Tuna-derived ingredients provide a natural tuna aroma and taste, offering an opportunity to combine nutritional functionality with palatability.

Ultimately, selecting the right ingredients according to life stage and health needs—while considering quality, scientific evidence, palatability, and responsible resource utilization—can help drive the development of more meaningful and sustainable nutrition solutions for pets.
