The seminar “Ultra-Processed Foods (UPFs) and NCDs”
by FoSTAT highlighted the growing link between increased
UPFs consumption and the rising prevalence of non-
communicable diseases (NCDs). While food processing
improves safety, shelf life, and convenience, UPFs often involve
intensive industrial processes and food additives that may affect
physiological responses and stimulate the brain’s reward
system, leading to overconsumption and higher health risks.
A “Holistic Equation for Health” was proposed,
encouraging the private sector to reformulate products with
improved nutrition, while the public sector supports healthier
choices through policies such as HFSS taxes and front-of-pack
labelling. Strengthening consumer awareness and cross-sector
collaboration are essential to achieving sustainable long-term
health outcomes.
