a contraction of 0.0% to 5.0%. Products that could experience a
continuous sales slump this year are those in the fresh fishery
(-12.0% to -8.0%). Due to feeble market demand, competition in
this sector is expected to intensify amid Thailand’s struggle to
enhance its competitiveness. Meanwhile, processed seafood
products may receive a boost from moderate market demand,
especially during 1H21. Nonetheless, exports this year may be
almost unchanged due to a higher base in 2020 from accelerated
demand in major markets during the lockdown periods. For this
reason, Thailand’s processed seafood exports will likely remain
almost unchanged (-2.0% to 2.0%) compared to the previous year.
All businesses in this sector are advised to cope with the sluggish
market amid anxiety over food safety. Focus should be on traceability
in the production system, certification from an internationally
recognized agency, as well as the development of products that set
themselves apart from competitors and correspond to changes in
consumer demand. Possible actions may include introducing special
dishes that can be prepared at home instead of dining out at
restaurants, or size reduction for food packaging to support the
growth of the retail consumer market, which is outperforming its
business counterpart. These elements would help to expand market
                  opportunities for all players.
With regard to future business trends, Thai fishery product
exporters will increasingly encounter issues linked to non-tariff trade
measures, particularly those related to labor and food safety since
trading partners are highly likely to use these matters to justify the
establishment of trade barriers. Emphasis should be placed on
transparency throughout the inspection and various production
processes in order to enhance consumer confidence towards the
products. Even though manufacturers may incur rising operational
costs, these actions may help raise production standards of Thai
fishery products over the long term.
