Foreign Business Investment in Vietnam
• Vietnam attracts foreign investors by virtue of its advantages in
terms of wage rates that are not too high, the advantage of the rich
resources in the country and political stability. However, investors are
also concerned about the relatively high inflation rate and fluctuations
in the value of dong currency exchange rate. Foreign investment in
2011 reached about USD 14.7 billion or declination to lower than
21% (YoY). During the first 5 months of 2012, over 283 projects were
approved, worth about USD 4.51 billion or declination of 0.02% as
compared to the same period last year. Vietnam actually aims to
attract investment by about USD 15 billion within 2012.
• The leading country to invest in Vietnam in 2012 is still Japan
through investing of more than 69%. Japan is followed by the British
Virgin Island and Hong Kong, respectively. The industries that have
been the focus of the foreign investment are manufacture industry
where the investment is worth 62%. The second rank industry is
real estate business with approximately about 30% investment.
The important project is to develop a residential area in Binh Duong
Province at the south of Vietnam under the cooperation of Vietnam
and Japan. The areas where foreign investments are critical are
Binh Duong in the south of the country, Hai Phong and Dong Nai,
respectively.
The Potential Thai Businesses in Vietnam
Thailand investment in Vietnam today is to build plants to produce
products and operate the marketing activities through representatives
or distributors in the country. Most investments are joint venture with
partners in Vietnam or the acquisitions of existing operators. The
businesses are located in the major investment promotion zones such as
Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh. Thailand’s main business investments in
Vietnam are, for example,
• Agricultural/animal feed products: Large manufacturing plants
are constructed in Bien Hoa industrial estate of Dong Nai Province
as a manufacturing base to meet domestic consumption and partial
export.
• Paper mill: in the Minh Phuoc industrial zone, Binh Doung
province with production capacity of 220,000 tons per year to meet
the demand of increasing consumption of Kraft paper in Vietnam.
• Power and natural gas: Business investment of Thailand is in
the sea to the south and southwest of the Vietnam, near the coastal
town of Vung Tau.
• Industrial estates: located in the province of Dong Nai, close
to Ho Chi Minh City. The expansion project governs more than nine
thousand acres. The land is divided into residential areas, factories
and offices.
• Jewelry business: the manufacturing plant has a capacity of
about three hundred thousand pieces per year. It is located in Bien
Hoa industrial estate of Dong Nai Province.
